Sort order. Start your review of What Happens in Paradise. Sep 17, Erin rated it really liked it Shelves: kindle , netgalley. One of my most anticipated books of the fall. Read it in one swoop, but So book two picks up very close to where Winter in Paradise left off. Irene returns home to deal with the legal and personal challenges in making it known that Russ has died.
Yet she cannot resist the pull to return to the villa and Huck. Sons Cash and Baker are both changed for the better by their experiences and set about to start anew. Of course, Ayers is still a big issue between the brothers. But she's back with her cheating ex and it appears to be going well. Finally, Huck realizes that it's not so easy to deal with a teenage Maia. But when the FBI comes a knocking, none of our characters might be prepared for what happens next.
It felt so great to be back in the Virgin Islands and with Elin Hilderbrand's fantastic characters. As a reader, I just cannot help but feel that I am revisiting old friends or family. Now here comes the BUT! As much as I loved and give this book a 4 star which is by no means a bad rating , I felt that it wasn't as strong is its predecessor. In fact, it felt a bit like filler. Things happened fast for our characters, but there's a lot of wishy washy behavior looking at you, Ayers.
Almost like EH had to pull herself back and "save the good stuff" for book 3. I haven't mentioned it previously but we get increments of Rosie's diary and how she met Russ and their whirlwind courtship.
After all, it does explain a few plot points. As a reader with a personal opinion, I am not sure that I needed that "voice. This book is yet again a fantastic read! I love that twist on the mystery of Irene's husband. His death has changed course and I'm hooked on wanting to find out what happened. Irene's marriage is such a lesson learned. It's so easy to be caught up in our own interests that we neglect our loved ones.
I could say that I sometimes rather read than talk to my husband lol. I love Rosie's view as well as everyone else. I like the reminder to experience more of where you live because I do regret not si This book is yet again a fantastic read! I like the reminder to experience more of where you live because I do regret not sightseeing places nearby Wisconsin and Georgia and now that I have moved away from there I will not have a chance to travel there anymore due to expenses.
This book is told in the third person point of view following Irene as she dreamed yet again of Russ, her husband of 35 years until his recent death. She dreamed that he's still alive. The second view is Ayers. The third view is Cash. He's thinking to move back to St Johns and work at Treasure Island now that his business has tanked. The fourth view is Huck. He enlisted Ayers to clean out Rosie's room and they both found the surprise in the dresser drawer.
The fifth view is Rosie, told in first person via diary. Rosie talks about her life and how she met Russ.
The sixth view is Baker. His wife is leaving him and he thinks to move to St Johns permanently. The FBI called and are conducting an investigation into Irene's husband death. What Happens in Paradise is an excellent storytelling by Elin Hilderbrand. I like the story of love in this book: "Love is messy, complicated, and unfair.
Then Rosie's love story is another complicated thing as well as other characters in this book. Another cliffhanger ending, one I have guessed it just because of the where the money came from. I'm surprised Irene and her sons didn't figure that out. It's interesting how islanders are like small towners, the gossip mill is the only thing people with secrets are afraid of. I haven't read too many women's fiction but this book and the first one are definitely unputdownable and I highly recommend everyone to read them!

Longtime fans of the author and her cozy yet elevated books—and I know there are millions of them out there—are probably delighted to see this as a selection, while others may be wondering if we chose this book simply because there are millions of them out there.
This book picks up where Winter in Paradise left off: Iowa housewife Irene is struggling to accept the unexpected death of her jetsetting businessman husband, her sons Cash and Baker are each struggling with their girl dramas, and Ayers—the deeply relatable St. Johns local—is making bad decisions. Escapist, addictive, and downright enthralling! In this latest novel in the Paradise series, What Happens in Paradise, we head back to the idyllic island of St. John and into the lives of the Steele family who after the turbulent events triggered by the death of the patriarch in the first novel begin to accept, heal, move on, take chances, forge new friendships, and find new love even while the underlying feelings of dread still linger.
The writing is smooth and seamless. The characters are hesita Escapist, addictive, and downright enthralling! The characters are hesitant, multilayered, and intriguing. And the plot is an alluring tale of life, loss, heartbreak, friendship, family, coming-of-age, secrets, deception, corruption, and new beginnings. Overall, What Happens in Paradise is a heartwarming, mysterious, romantic, domestic drama that keeps you engaged and invested from start to finish and with its beautiful infusions of island living and tantalizing cliffhanger ending it will undoubtedly leave you eager for more and counting down the days until the third and final novel in this trilogy becomes available.

I get that second series novels often have their problems but they shouldn't be this bad, especially when you know the author is capable of so much better. Unexpectedly, I find myself in a "meh" state of mind. It was easily a 5-star read for me: entertaining, thought-provoking, compelling, and a cliff hanger to boot. Well, What Happens in Paradise has the cliff hanger. It's sorta entertaining at parts. It's not very thought-provoking, and the only thing that compelled me to keep going was the attachment I fostered to the characters in the first novel.
Maybe it's me? I'm coming off an page book with lo Unexpectedly, I find myself in a "meh" state of mind. I'm coming off an page book with lots of character development and maybe this just felt Too unfinished?
Too rushed? I'm bummed though, I've been looking forward to this read all dang year! Will I stick around for number three of the series? But I'm hoping number three can recapture the magic that the first book has.

There was lightning in the area, but the damage to the helicopter seems to have been caused by an explosive device. Once they got there, they discovered Russell had a second life that included another woman, their child, plus an extravagant condo he owned. Irene needed to talk to their family lawyer, someone she knew and trusted, for guidance. John they both love and want to hate. The pull of this beautiful paradise is almost magnetic, and not just for its natural wonders.
The people they all met, well certain people, have charmed each of them. Keeping up?! They need to figure out who Ayers really cares about since when they left the island she went back to her cheating boyfriend, Mick. Both Cash and Baker definitely think Mick is wrong for her, but who is the right guy. The big plus in this second book is we hear from Rosie and a little about what went on when she met Russ.
Ayers and Huck found more, but you have to read this book to find out. I raced through it the first time, then like a movie you love but were afraid you missed something, I read it again. Honest, I did.
I might actually read it a third time; it was that good. Mm, a movie?! HBO series?! Oh my goodness just like book one this book left me hanging. I had no idea there was going to be another book. I now have to wait until sometime in to find out what happens. The most shocking part: it occurred on the island of St.
John, where he apparently lived a double life with another family. Now Irene and her two grown sons are back on the island, trying to move on—and learn more about the life Russ led there.
I really am loving this series. It was, per usual, a delicious Hilderbrand read. I love these characters, especially stalwart Irene. And Huck, oh Huck, the tough yet sweet fishing captain. She just captures them all so perfectly! This book is really quite fascinating—almost a mystery. This is a fun, dramatic, and engaging read. Also, this was my first read BOTM. I know this is meant to be a trilogy but the way this book was paced you could tell she only had enough of a story for maybe two books and dragged out whatever she could to fill pages.

Rather boring and felt as though nothing happened. At least the last book will bring some answers Mar 22, Katie never.
Elin Hilderbrand has done it again! Since I discovered her books last summer, she has been moving her way up my list of favorite authors. She is the queen of transporting you into the setting of her stories.
It is evident that she has lived in and loves that lands she writes about. While I love her Nantucket stories, I think St. John in the Paradise series is even better! I loved this first book and was so excited to find out it was series! What Happens in Paradise picks up right where Winter in Paradise left off.

It was so nice to return to the Caribbean in What Happens in Paradise book two and see how the characters from book one of this Paradise Series were doing. This was an easy read with a fairly predictable cliff-hanger ending but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. A word of caution, though: the story continues where Winter in Paradise left off and there are very few backstories as to what happened in the previous book and who is who.
If you can wait until the third book is published next year, binge by reading all three in one sitting. Thanks to the publisher for the advance digital reading copy.
