Please try again. I've read all of Elin's books and I was so excited when I saw she was setting her new novel in a lush Caribbean location, as she always evokes setting so well in her Nantucket novels. That particular aspect didn't disappoint either, as we got to know vividly the sights, sounds, colours and flavours of the island of St John. Plenty of welcome details about food and restaurants, as is familiar from her Nantucket books.

The lead character, the widowed Irene, was well drawn and sympathetic. I could understand her reactions whilst on St John and why she wanted to go fishing for the day.

This sympathy, however, I could not extend to her two sons, Cash and Baker. Both had lost their father just the day before and yet showed no grief whatsoever. Instead, they both pursued the same girl, wining and dining her and going on happy snorkelling trips. I just found this so jarring and it made me dislike both men, which I'm sure wasn't Elin's intention. They weren't depicted as being estranged from their dad Russ either, so there was no excuse for their callous response to his death.

That being said, I love the way Elin writes and will go along with any of her plots. I still think she is at her most powerful describing the sea, the beaches, the hills, the sky, the weather and the food lol. For this reason I am pleading with her to depict the experience and impact of Hurricane Irma on St John in her next novel. Elin, come on, it would be a tour de force, your best ever novel.

The terrifying build up as the hurricane became a Cat 5, the sound and fury of the storm, the looting at Caneel and the Westin, the devastation, the once pure, now polluted ocean after rain due to the landslides, the power outages, the lines for gas and water, the slow recovery. You could keep the same cast of characters for sure and use all your own local knowledge too.

I think Elin described an imaginary hurricane hitting Nantucket before in a much earlier novel and it was a compelling read. I live in hope! This book was amazing from page 1. I was worried I wouldn’t like this book as it wasn’t set in Nantucket but I loved this book! It has all the captivating amazing details that Elin writes with!! It has descriptions of her loving characters and their struggles and how they try to deal with them!! Food features as well which is always good! Elin loves writing about food and I love reading about it!

The main character Irene I loved, she is a strong woman with an ideal life which crumbles around her when her husband dies and she discovers his secret life. Ayers was my fav character, whose best friend also dies, Irene has 2 sons and I really liked Baker who has a lot of problems to deal with in this book, I felt a bit sorry for him in the end. My only problem is I finished the book in a day and now I have to wait a year for the next instalment!!! I just think Elin Hildebrand gets better and better!

I loved this book - a bit of mystery and romance in a fabulous setting I’d never been aware of. I thought she described very well the shock of his loved ones on discovering that this deceased ordinary family man was in fact an extraordinary man living an apparently ultra glamorous lifestyle, and can’t wait to read the sequel to find out just what he’d had to do to earn that lifestyle.

I actually hope this series is a trilogy as i’ve enjoyed the first book so much! All one dimensional characters. Didn't care about them. Too many loose ends but realise at the very end the story has to continue. Hence another novel in the pipeline. Take me back to Nantucket. Load more international reviews. A good read! I hope there's a sequel as there's too many loose ends and no real conclusion. It kept me entertained and wanting to visit the Virgin Isles!

Loved it right up to the ending, I couldn’t believe it, I want to know what happened next, that’s the reason I deducted a star. I love all of her books and blew through this one only to find it's part of a series - very exciting! Just not a very exciting book though did enjoy the ending! Couldn't put this book down!!! Loved it. After listening to this book on my daily commute with I knew the audiobook version would be enjoyed by other family members and they all loved this intelligently spun story.

Elin Hilderbrand writes witty enough to entertain after a long day at work without my mind starting to wander and lose the thread - perfect!
